Snack 'could have cost man's life'

A SMOKE alarm probably saved the life of a Rotherham man after a kitchen fire, firefighters said.

The smoke alarm sounded and woke the man in his 60s, who had fallen asleep with a pan on the hob at his home on High Greave Place, East Herringthorpe.

Thick smoke engulfed the property before fire crews from Rotherham and Maltby attended and extinguished the blaze at around 10pm last night.

There was no one else in the property at the time of the incident, but a dog also managed to escape safely.

Firefighters issued the following advice: have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home; never leave cooking unattended and not to attempt to cook if you have been drinking.
