Smoke alarm saves house blaze woman

A YOUNG woman escaped from a house fire after being alerted by a smoke alarm.

The woman was already out of the property on Nursery Road, Dinnington, when fire crews from Aston, Maltby and Rotherham stations arrived just before midnight last Thursday.

The fire, which was contained to the living room, is thought to have started due to an electrical fault.

Firefighters have now urged householders to make sure that they have a working smoke alarm in their property.

  • They say to keep a smoke alarm in good working order you should:
  • Test it once a week, by pressing the test button until the alarm sounds.
  • Never cover it or remove the batteries.
  • Gently clean it every few months with a duster or vacuum cleaner to remover dust or cobwebs.
  • Change the battery once a year (unless it’s a ten-year alarm).
  • Replace the whole unit every ten years.
