Sleeping man rescued from burning home

FIRE crews across the borough had their hands full with a dramatic weekend described by a spokeswoman as “very busy”.

In one incident, a man was rescued by firefighters who found him asleep in his burning home.

The house on Carr Close, Brinsworth, was full of smoke when crews arrived shortly after 9.15pm on Sunday.

Neighbours dialled 999 when they heard a smoke alarm sounding—the lone occupant had begun cooking and then falling asleep, leaving a pan on the hob.

Three crews from Darnall and Rotherham fire stations used fans to ventilate the house after waking the oblivious occupant and leading him outside.

The man, described as being in his 40s, was treated for smoke inhalation.

Eleswhere, bar in Greasbrough was evacuated by firefighters just half an hour later when electrics caught fire and filled it with smoke.

Crews from Rotherham and Dearne stations used powder to put out the blaze at Greasbrough Working Men’s Club, Church Street, leaving the scene around two hours later.

Several people suffered minor smoke inhalation, but no-one is reported to have been injured.
