The veteran defender's present contract is due to expire at the end of the season and discussions on extending his long stay at the club are at an advanced stage.

When the 36-year-old, who joined the Millers in 2014, was asked if putting pen to paper was a formality, he replied: "Yeah, I'd like to think so.”

He added: "There's just a few loose ends to tie up. There's no rush. I'm sure the club have bigger issues than me to sort out."

Wood skippered the side to a 1-0 victory at Cambridge United yesterday that saw them stretch their unbeaten run to 21 matches and remain two points clear at the summit of League One.

"I'm enjoying myself at the moment," said the former Sheffield Wednesday man. "I'm loving every minute. Rotherham are 'my' club now.

"We're top of the league and I'm playing most weeks. The lads do all the hard work. I just organise them and lead them out. It's a pleasure playing with them."

Wood has twice won promotion to the Championship with the Millers and is the longest-serving player at AESSEAL New York Stadium

"I've been here eight years and I've loved most of my time here," he said. "I've had some bad times but there have been plenty of good ones."

The manager who signed him, Steve Evans, hardly played him and the defender was also out of favour under Neil Redfearn and Alan Stubbs.

However, he has been a mainstay of the team during the five years in charge of present boss Paul Warne who describes the skipper's contribution as "colossal".

"It's nice to be spoken of highly by the manager," Wood said. "I appreciate everything he's done for me. It's been nice to read and listen to what he's been saying because I do take it on board.

"Obviously, in his eyes I'm doing the job he wants and needs me to do. It's working well."
