Sixties Twist Club promoter dies at 68

MUSIC mad Brian Turner who brought acts like Screaming Lord Sutch and Billy J Kramer to Rotherham has died at the age of 68.

Brian, of Wickersley Road, Stag, founded the Twist Club in a small room above the Bridge Inn, College Street, with his friend Stuart "Clive" Hope in 1957.

The club grew until it was attracting up to 1,000 music fans to the former Sheffield Road baths where they saw artistes like Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Screaming Lord Sutch, Dave Berry and the Cruisers, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and a young Joe Cocker.

Brian also worked alongside entrepreneur Peter Stringfellow during the hey-day of the Twist Club and helped out when the Rolling Stones came to Sheffield City Hall in 1963.

Brian was a steelworker until 1980, when he joined his brother’s business, Turner Hire, as Sheffield branch manager.

His funeral was being held today at Rotherham Crematorium.
