Sitwell pupils stride out on World Cup walk

THE World Cup has prompted youngsters at two Rotherham schools to get more exercise.

Pupils at Sitwell Junior and Infant schools travelled to school on foot with parents and carers in a special event on Friday.

The kids were accompanied by theatre company Histrionics, who went on to give an interactive performance.

Sitwell Junior School is one of just a handful of schools in Rotherham to earn a national Bronze Modeshift STARS award, recognising their efforts to promote walking, scooting and cycling, and Sitwell Infant School is working towards its Bronze STARS reaccreditation.

The event was part of the STARS South Yorkshire project which promotes active and sustainable travel to school.

Active travel officer for Rotherham Dom Qaiser Sweeting said: “A themed walking event like this encourages parents to leave the car at home and spend some quality time with their children on the way to school.

“It is just one of many different initiatives, activities, training and events that we offer to schools, to help pupils get active and stay healthy whilst reducing rush hour traffic.”
