Shaun delighted to be Labour choice for Police Commissioner

FORMER Mayor of Rotherham Shaun Wright has emerged as a front runner in the race to land the role of South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

Cllr Shaun Wright beat competition from former Chief Constable Med Hughes and Anglican clergyman Alan Billings to win the Labour Party nomination.

The new post will be filled following a public vote on November 15.

The Rawmarsh and Parkgate ward councillor was on holiday with his wife and two sons this week, but issued a brief message via  Twitter.

He stated: “I’m delighted to have gained the Labour nomination for SYPCC.

“A heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support. The hard work now begins!”

The appointment of a Police and Crime Commissioner will see the role of holding the police force and the Chief Constable to account handed over from the South Yorkshire

Police Authority, of which Cllr Wright is currently vice-chairman.

Cllr Wright said: “This is the biggest reform of policing for more than 25 years and so it is vital the changes do not affect the good work already being undertaken by the county’s police force.”
