Share your car and cut congestion

NEW signs will be erected beside traffic-clogged Rotherham roads to encourage motorists to car share.

About 2,000 people in South Yorkshire are already members of the scheme, which aims to cut rush hour congestion.

Local Transport Plan funding of £7,500 will pay for an initial batch of signs. Rotherham Borough Council chiefs said that the project will be deemed a success if there are at least 150 extra sign-ups.

Transportation officer Steve Brown said: “There has been a considerable amount of research into the most effective methods of promoting car sharing as a means of reducing congestion and traffic volumes.

“The authorities in South Yorkshire co-sponsor a car sharing website paid for from LTP funding.

“Research has concluded that the most effective method of advertising car share websites is through signs at the roadside or on lighting columns.”
