A spokesman for The Scout Association said this morning (Thursday): “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a ten-year-old boy was taken ill while attending a Scout camp in South Yorkshire and later died.

“We understand that the young person was taken ill while walking to the camp’s closing ceremony and was not undertaking an activity at the time.

“He was treated at the scene by off-duty paramedics and then transferred to hospital.”

He added: “We are doing all we can to support everyone involved.

“The death of any young person is devastating, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the young person during this very difficult time.”
