School's clock tower facing axe in redevelopment plan

A LANDMARK clock tower looks set to be bulldozed to make way for a multi-million pound university campus-style development at a Rotherham area school.

Maltby Local History Society say that they are concerned that Maltby Academy’s “iconic”n clock tower frontage is under threat of demolition.

“Members deplored the idea and I was repeatedly asked to make representations on the matter,” said chairman Alice Rodgers, who said the matter was discussed at the society’s last meeting.

Academy head teacher Dave Sutton says a final decision has not been made but it is estimated that the bill for up-grading the building would be too high.

Construction firms BAM and Wates are preparing bids before the final plans are decided next month.

Maltby Town Council chairman John Carratt said he expected the matter to be discussed at a meeting next Thursday at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall.

He added: “My view is that it’s a focal point of Maltby and I would like to have kept it. But if this means better education for children in Maltby then we’ve got to move on.”
