School closed after asbestos find

An asbestos scare has forced a village junior school to close from today until Easter.

Workmen found the substance at Whiston Junior and Infant School on Saville Road this week as they were preparing for refurbishment work due to be carried out over the Easter holiday.

Year 6 pupils will be transferred to Whiston Worrygoose Junior and Infant School from today and the rest of the children will be moved to the Magna centre for lessons from Monday while the asbestos is removed.

A council spokesman said: “We’re closing the school after asbestos was found this week while work was being carried out as part of preparations for refurbishment which was already due to be carried out over the Easter holiday.”
