CONSISTENT high standards and outstanding instances of bravery were rewarded at the third Rotherham District Police Awards.

Eight awards were handed out and a dozen commendations presented at the Hellaby Hall Hotel ceremony last Wednesday.

Supt Andrew Parker said: “What is important is that these awards are not selected by management.

“It’s not me who chooses a winner, but their own colleagues.

“It's not easy being married to a cop. There are hard and stressful times and long shifts, so in a way, this is pay back for relatives.

“It's great for family members and friends to see their loved ones appreciated.”

Special guests on the night, which had a “sporting excellence” theme, were ex-cricketer Tony Bowry and former Football League referee Trelford Mills, who spoke about traits like teamwork and leadership, which apply to sport and policing.

Supt Parker said: “This is the third year running that the Rotherham district of South Yorkshire Police has held a one-day celebration of people that have been highlighted.

“They are not just police officers, but from a broad range of our partners.

Nominations go out three months before, or they can be sent in at any time of year for those who have continually provided a good quality of service.

“It’s not a pat on the back from us, because they get that when it’s deserved. “This is an opportunity to be recognised by your peers.”

Among the prizes presented by Supt Parker was the Leader In Action award, to Pc Paul Hamshaw for his sustained engagement with youngsters in the south of the borough.

“He’s constantly head and shoulders above others when it comes to working with kids in schools,” said Supt Parker, who said Wales High were among the schools grateful for Pc Hamshaw’s efforts.

“There have been some fantastic quotes from various head teachers and staff.

“Paul’s work is about what’s needed, rather than what’s glamorous, but it’s just as important.”

The winners will be put forward for the South Yorkshire Police Awards in March.
