Rush hour congestion after six-mile long diesel spillage on M1

RUSH hour traffic on the M1 was delayed this morning after diesel was spilled along a six-mile stretch of the road.

The M1 southbound was closed between junctions 35 for Thorpe Hesley and 34 for Meadowhall and Sheffield after the spillage at about 6am.

National Highways said the closure was causing 3.3 miles of congestion and adding at least 30 minutes to normal journey times.

It said the spillage was about six miles long and would take a considerable amount of time to clear up.
