Rotherham's railway station on track for top award

The landmark station, which opened to the public in 2012, has been praised for its lighting, new waiting room, passenger information screens and retail kiosk as well as disabled access by judges of the National Transport Awards 2013.

Despite an 18-month delay in construction, Rotherham Central Station was officially opened by the then Transport Secretary Justine Greening MP a year ago and is now visited by around half a million people each year.

The development of the station was led by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive  together with the Department for Transport, Network Rail, Northern Rail, and Rotherham Borough Council.

Richard Allan, Northern Rail area director, said: “Modern station facilities are one element of encouraging more people to travel by rail.

“This project has transformed the station environment and facilities, which the local community can rightly be proud of.”

In addition to Rotherham Central Station, SYPTE is celebrating being short-listed for the National Transport Awards’ Integrated Transport Authority of the Year Award.

Among the projects being recognised is SYPTE’s efforts to progress plans for Tram-Train and Bus Rapid Transit transport links between Sheffield and Rotherham.

The awards will be presented on October 17.
