Rotherham's railway heritage revived

A PIECE of Rotherham’s past, which has been hidden away for nearly two decades, is set to be back on public display next week.

The stone crest of Rotherham's first railway, from the former Westgate Station, has been brought out of museum storage and been erected outside the redeveloped Rotherham Central station.

The 4ft high crest, which was pride of place at the ground-breaking Westgate Station, was moved to Boston Castle when the station was demolished in the 1950s, to then be rescued in the mid-1990s by heritage fan Cllr Ken Wyatt, and placed in storage for safekeeping.

Now the railway station's transformation has been completed, the stone crest will be formally unveiled next Wednesday.
