Rotherham's population hits a new high

ROTHERHAM’S population has grown by 3.4 per cent — taking the total to a record 257,600.

There were 9,400 more people living in the borough in 2011 than ten years earlier, census figures show.

The population is ageing broadly in line with national trends, a Rotherham Borough Council report says.

Nearly a quarter of the people living in the borough are aged over 60 and almost 18 per cent are under 15.

The previous census record was 253,700 in 1991 after which economic decline saw the population dip until around 2000.
