Rotherham workers "need 49 per cent pay rise" to get on housing ladder

THE average full-time worker in Rotherham needs a 49 per cent pay rise to afford a mortgage, a housing body’s report revealed.

Salaries have failed to keep up with property prices, with the average home costing £150,946 — more than six times the average income of £23,114.

A National Housing Federation report said those earning less than £34,502 are priced out of entering the buying market.

Tony Stacey, chief executive of South Yorkshire Housing Association, said: “We tend to talk as though there is just one housing crisis, but it takes many different forms.

“It is not just about the impossibility of affording a home in London or people sleeping rough.

“For far too many people, affordable housing is simply out of reach.

“We should expect more from both national and local politicians to find solutions that work for all sections of society here in Rotherham.”

The report also highlights the severe shortfall of new homes, with the South Yorkshire region 6,500 properties short of demand between 2012 and 2016.

SYHA has plans for 1,180 homes by 2021. It built 73 last year, including on the White City estate in Maltby.
