VACCINE take-up in Rotherham is above the national average, according to the latest figures, with more than half a million Covid-19 jabs given in the borough.

Nearly 85 per cent of people in Rotherham eligible for vaccination had received their first dose — 202,892 people — by this Monday, compared with the average in England of 78.6 per cent.

More than three quarters (78.2 per cent) have had a second dose in Rotherham, while the national average is 72.2 per cent.

Over half (52 per cent) have had their third or booster shot — the figure for England is 43.4 per cent.

Last weekend, more than 138,437 people in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw answered the NHS and government’s call to get their booster jab, in what vaccines minister Maggie Throup called a “crucial national mission”.

The vaccination centre at Dearne Valley Leisure Centre also had a record-breaking few days.

Bex Cottey, business manager at Conisbrough Group Practice, said: “We vaccinated more than 1,100 patients every day on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday this last week — which is a new record for us.

“This is a great time to get your booster — any mild side effects will have worn off before Christmas and there are no queues.

“If anyone is overdue their second vaccine, wants their first, is of any age over 12 years, then please come down, no appointment necessary.”

Dr Yvette Oade, the NHS region’s clinical lead for the Covid-19 vaccination programme, said: “It’s been a fantastic weekend for the vaccination programme, with NHS staff working tirelessly to get as many people as possible protected from the virus.

“The accelerated booster programme has been embraced by people across our region, and vaccination teams have been delighted by their response.”

A spokesperson for Rotherham Council said: “Currently, the vaccine uptake for Rotherham is above the national average with over 514,600 Covid-19 vaccinations been given to residents.

“More vaccination appointments and walk-in sessions are being planned across the borough.
