Smith scored five league goals, provided two assists and was also on target in the EFL Trophy.

Warne faces competition from Wycombe Wanderers' Gareth Ainsworth, Plymouth Argyle's Ryan Lowe and Oxford United's Karl Robinson while Smith is up against Danny Andrew (Fleetwood Town), James McClean (Wigan Athletic) and Harry Pell (Accrington Stanley).

The Rotherham boss's citation reads: "Warne’s men made light work of a daunting-looking fixture list, collecting 13 points from five unbeaten games with a 14-2 goal differential. Portsmouth were beaten 4-1 and Sunderland 5-1 as their challenge gathered momentum."

Smith's reads: "Enjoying one of his most prolific seasons, he scored five goals and assisted two others in five games, using his physicality in the box to hold off defenders. His cheeky back-heeled goal against Sunderland underlined his confidence."

Ainsworth had four wins and two draws in an undefeated month for Wycombe, Ryan Lowe led Plymouth to 14 points from six unbeaten matches that took them into top spot and Robinson guided Oxford to four wins from five outings.

Among the players, full-back Andrew scored three times, including twice from spectacular free-kicks, winger McClean bagged four goals and two assists and Pell struck four of Accrington's seven October goals and assisted two of the others.

The managerial award will be decided by a four-man panel of former Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Barnsley boss Danny Wilson, Sky Sports EFL pundit Don Goodman, EFL communications director Mark Rowan and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies.

Sitting in judgement on the player prize will be Goodman, Rowan and Davies.

The winners will be announced on Friday morning.
