The 24-year-old has started twice for his country in the last week and scored for the second time in his last three international outings in last night's 3-0 win in Luxembourg.

"Good things are happening to me right now," he said. "I believe in my ability in the same way the (Republic) coaches believe in me.

“I didn’t expect to be scoring. I just wanted to be the best I could be for the team and to give my all. I am happy to be getting goals for my effort.

“In 12 months, my career has really taken a drastic change. To experience football at this high level, it’s joyful for me. I am really enjoying myself."

Ogbene, whose first goal Ireland goal came in a 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan last month, was on target against Luxembourg as the Republic wrapped up their World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign in style.

His two international strikes mean he has scored more times for his country than his club!

The Nigerian-born attacker, who grew up in Cork, played against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in a 0-0 qualifying draw in Dublin last Thursday.

Having won his first international call-up in June, he now has five caps.
