The in-form Scot lasted only 13 minutes of the Millers' 2-1 win before succumbing to a hamstring injury.

The length of his absence is not yet known but manager Paul Warne, whose side climbed out of the drop zone into 20th place with their third triumph in the last four games, is anticipating around three weeks.

"It's disappointing," the manager said following Saturday's showdown. "We play so much on the physical edge that it's a tough ask for the players to do it all the time

"I wasn't normally quick enough to pull my hamstring when I was a player but I once pulled it on the Saturday and played on the Tuesday. I'm hoping Jamie is one of those superhuman people, but I'm not expecting him to be. We'll see.

"He is in pain now which isn't a great sign. If he's pulled his hammy, it will be two to three weeks."

Warne made five changes including resting prolific attacking duo Michael Smith and Matt Crooks with Tuesday night's home clash with Cardiff City in mind.

Both Rotherham goals - a Joe Rafferty header past his own goalkeeper and an excellent strike from Lindsay's replacement, Ben Wiles - came before the pair replaced Freddie Ladapo and George Hirst in the 66th minute.

"I thought Freddie and George were excellent," Warne said. "Their work rate was good. We ask a lot of our strikers. They're not like number 9s who stand there and do the odd overhead kick. They have to work so hard out of possession.

"It was always the intention that we would flip it after 60 minutes because the demands are so great."

Winger Kieran Sadlier, out since November with an ankle problem, travelled to Preston with the squad and went through a fitness routine on the Deepdale pitch before kick-off.

The 26-year-old may be included in the matchday 19 against the Bluebirds.
