Rotherham United set to break new ground with Salford City away tie in Carabao Cup

The tie will also bring the Millers face to face with Richie Towell, the midfielder who helped the club to promotion to the second tier two years ago while on loan from Brighton.

The match at the 5,000-capacity Peninsula Stadium is set to be played behind closed doors in line with current social distancing and crowd restrictions. It is provisionally set for September 5 - a week before the start of the league season - but that could change.

Salford rose up the pyramid after being taken over by former Manchester United players Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt in 2014. Promoted to the Football League last year, the club finished 11th in its inaugural season in League Two. 

Reacting to the draw, Millers assistant manager Richie Barker said: "I would rather the tie had been at home because with no fans in the stadium, it would have given our new players the opportunity to play here behind closed doors before playing in a league game.

"But it is what it is, a very tough draw because Salford will be one of the favourites to be in and around the promotion battle in League Two."
