The Millers left it late, landing their man on a season-long loan with only minutes to go until the 11pm close of the transfer window.

On a night when Rotherham also held on to prize asset Michael Smith, Grigg arrived at AESSEAL New York Stadium before 9pm to sign his contract. However, the other formalities of the deal took a while to complete.

Grigg has struggled for goals at the Stadium of Light but has been a regular scorer elsewhere in his career.

The Solihull-born 30-year-old has done well at third-tier level in the past for Wigan Athletic and MK Dons and has also bagged goals in the Championship for Athletic.

Boss Paul Warne had said that adding to his frontline was "essential" as the Millers look for a hat-trick of League One promotions under his leadership.

Chairman Tony Stewart backed his manager and the deal was done after a day of talks during which Rotherham fought of interest from other clubs including South Yorkshire neighbours Doncaster Rovers.

Grigg hit the target 65 times in 150 appearances for the Latics while his record for MK, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, is just as impressive.

The Northern Ireland international scored 22 times in 50 games for them in 2014/15 and eight in 20 matches between February and May earlier this year.

Sunderland paid £4 million in the last few minutes of the window in January 2019 to take him from Wigan who had signed him for £900,000 from MK in July 2015.

After becoming the seventh Millers signing of the summer, he will compete for a place with Smith, Freddie Ladapo and Josh Kayode.

Grigg was a scorer against Rotherham at AESSEAL New York Stadium in November 2017 when Wigan won 3-1 in a season when both teams went up to the Championship.

His move to Sunderland never worked and 62 outings brought only eight goals, making him surplus to requirements for their manager, Lee Johnson.

This season, he has featured only once, in an EFL Cup game.
