Rotherham United recall Jerry Yates

ROTHERHAM United manager Paul Warne has let his head rule his heart by recalling striker Jerry Yates from his prolific loan spell.

The Millers boss knew that the 23-year-old was happy at League Two Swindon Town where he has hit 13 goals in 29 appearances since joining them in August.

But he decided Yates could strengthen his table-topping League One squad for the promotion run-in and the forward has now returned to AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Warne told the Advertiser last week: "If we needed him here I would pull him back. But I know that where he wants to be is there.

"I don't want to reluctantly pull him back and not use him. I can't do that to him. I just have to see how my team is over the next couple of weeks.

"There is less pressure on me to bring him back because our strikers are doing really well. They're scoring.

"If we were just outside the play-offs and hadn't scored for three games the pressure would be much greater. At this moment, I'm happy as it is."

Losing Yates is a devastating blow to the Robins who harbour promotion ambitions of their own in the fourth tier.

Their boss, Richie Wellens - a former teammate of Warne's at Oldham Athletic - told the Swindon Advertiser earlier this month: “The conversations I’ve had with Rob Scott (Rotherham head of recruitment) and Paul Warne have given us no indication that they’re going to call Jerry back.

“Jerry is enjoying his football and we plan on keeping him for the rest of the season."

Yates’ Rotherham contract is due to expire the summer but the Millers have an option to extend it by 12 months.
