Rotherham United boss Paul Warne's update on strikers Will Grigg and Freddie Ladapo and potential incomings

The centre-forward's parent club, Sunderland, are big promotion rivals of the table-topping League One Millers.

That has sparked fears that, following Rotherham goal-getter Freddie Ladapo's decision to hand in a transfer request, the Black Cats could try to disrupt Paul Warne's squad even further by recalling Grigg this month.

Manager Warne is putting his faith in Sunderland counterpart Lee Johnson staying true to his word.

"I spoke to Lee this week at length," the boss said. "He reassured me there is no issue with Griggy. I wouldn't expect him to go back on that.

"I trust Sunderland and I trust their manager, so I don't foresee a problem."

Thirty-year-old Grigg, out of contract at the Stadium of Light in the summer, endured an unhappy time on Wearside and favours remaining in South Yorkshire.

The Black Cats can't sell him or loan him to another EFL side because he has already appeared for two clubs - them and the Millers - this season.

Ladapo, aged 28, is determined to leave AESSEAL New York Stadium in the January transfer window but Rotherham will demand a big fee for their record signing and so far any clubs keen to land his services have yet to make their move.

"There's no interest that I know of," said Warne after yesterday's FA Cup penalty-shoot-out exit at Championship QPR. "However, I could turn my phone on in about ten minutes and I might have someone telling me that something's happened."

The Millers have identified potential replacements for Ladapo but no arrivals are imminent.

Meanwhile, Rotherham loan centre-half Rarmani Edmonds-Green has signed a new contract with his Championship club, Huddersfield Town, who are delighted with his progress at New York.

"They're really happy for him to keep his development going here," Warne said. "He's grown up a little bit with us, I think, and he's had a really good season. If they have a disaster tomorrow, they could pull him back, but I can't see it happening."
