Rotherham United boss Paul Warne ponders Joe Mattock call

The left-back hasn't played since requiring ankle surgery in December but is back in full training and has worked out on the pitch before the club's last few matches.

Third-bottom Rotherham, four points behind nearest rivals Derby County with two games in hand, are at home to Boro who are managed by Neil Warnock, the man who famously led the Millers to second-tier safety in 2016.

"Joe will possibly be available," said boss Paul Warne following Sunday's 1-0 loss against Birmingham City. "I thought he might have been involved against Coventry (last Thursday) but it wasn't the case.

"It usually takes him couple of games to get fit, historically. But needs must. We need to be positive and on the front foot so if I need to play him he will want to help out."

Rotherham are checking on defenders Angus MacDonald (foot) and Clark Robertson (tight achilles).

Warne's players were given today off after a brutal run of four fixtures in nine days and will be anxiously watching events at Deepdale tomorrow night where a Derby win over Preston North End would take the Rams seven points clear of the Millers.

Eleventh-placed Boro arrive at AESSEAL New York Stadium with little to play and victory is vital for Rotherham if they are to keep alive their hopes of staying up.

Warne was Millers fitness coach under Warnock and said: "It's an opportunity. It was an opportunity against Birmingham. Playing against my old gaffer on Wednesday night is an opportunity to win a game of football but that is all it is.

Rotherham have lost their last two games and, playing for the fourth time in nine days, threw away the chance of a much-needed victory against Birmingham by failing to convert any of the 17 openings they created.

"We have to take the chances that present themselves and that might be enough to win a game,” Warne said. “I would like a few extra days off, I am not going to lie."
