Rotherham United boss Paul Warne on the Curtis Tilt situation

The centre-half is on loan at League One promotion rivals Wigan Athletic and due to spend the rest of the season there but the Millers have a clause in the deal that allows them to recall him in the January transfer window.

Rotherham top the division heading into the festive period and may feel there is no need to add to their numbers by bringing back a player who has barely featured for them in his two years at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“There’s no decision yet,” manager Paul Warne said. “We keep our eye on it. We’ve been in contact with his representative but the details of that will remain between the club and him.

“We’ll get to January, then all parties will talk and come to a decision.”

Tilt joined Rotherham in a £100,000 move from Blackpool on January 2020 but has been hit by injuries and has played only once for the club.

He is in his third loan spell with the Latics and is believed to be open to a permanent switch to the DW Stadium. He is under contract until the summer of 2022 and the Millers would demand a fee for his services if he was to leave.

The 30-year-old has forced his way into Wigan’s side and has been a regular for the last six weeks.

The situation has been discussed regularly by the Millers’ technical board which includes Warne, chairman Tony Stewart, head of recruitment Rob Scott and various other members of staff.

Without Tilt, Rotherham have League One’s best defensive record and also have another central defender, Angus MacDonald, back in training after being absent since pre-season.

“Curtis is doing well at Wigan and we’re doing well with what we’ve got here,” Warne said.
