TEENAGE trialist Nigel Lonwijk has headed back to his Premier League club after Rotherham United turned down the chance to sign him on a season-long loan.

The Millers could see the potential in Wolves' Dutch 19-year-old centre-half but decided against taking a gamble on a player with no senior experience for their Championship campaign.

They have brought in three central defenders in Jamie McCart, Cameron Humphreys and Grant Hall.

Rules governing trials allow players to appear in only two friendlies and Lonwijk turned out against Harrogate Town and Salford City before spending another ten days training with Rotherham.

"We were hit by that ruling," assistant manager Richie Barker said. "We would have liked to have seen a bit more of him in men's football and competing against league opposition.

"What a great lad Nigel is. He's a young man who isn't English but he came here, worked hard and acquitted himself well. He should be given a great deal of credit for that.

"Maybe people thought he deserved an opportunity but it would have been one hell of a leap for him."

The Millers are going mainly for new recruits with experience this summer and the arrival of Hall on loan from Middlesbrough last Saturday signalled the end of Lonwijk's chances of staying in South Yorkshire.

Meanwhile, Rotherham hope Ollie Rathbone will return to training tomorrow after the midfielder went off in the first half of Saturday's 2-1 pre-season win at Crewe Alexandra with a tight thigh.

"We planned for him to play 60 minutes, possibly 45," Barker said. "He knows his own body and hopefully has done the right thing to prevent it from becoming worse. We'll have a look at him on Monday and hopefully he'll be back the day after."

New wing-back Cohen Bramall should be with the main group again today after a ten-day injury absence.
