Rotherham town centre subway plagued by litter

ROTHERHAM Council has insisted subways under a town centre roundabout are regularly swept for dumped rubbish after piles of waste were spotted in one of the underpasses.

Our photographer snapped the sorry scene in the tunnel at St Ann’s roundabout next to Tesco Extra, the entrance of which was given a facelift by artists who produced murals of some of the town’s most notable names.

The subway was lined with smelly rubbish, including soiled clothes and bedding.

An RMBC spokesperson said: “Our Streetpride team inspect St Ann’s subway every day during the week and the area is cleared of rubbish and thoroughly cleansed during every visit.

“The area is regularly patrolled, and action is taken against anyone found to be littering.”
