Rotherham scouting stalwart Tony Hawkins dies

SCOUTING chief Anthony (Tony) Hawkins who went along to his son's cub group to give a first aid lesson, but ended up staying with the scout movement for 35 years, has died aged 65.

 

Tony reached the rank of Assistant District Commissioner and received both the Medal of Merit and Silver Acorn for his long and outstanding service to the scout movement.

Tony was educated at  St Alban's Catholic primary school and Mexborough College.

In 1950 he became a shot firer at Cadeby Colliery and later married wife Mollie, whom he met aged 17.

In 1982 Tony became a reader at All Saints Church before working with Rev John Packer at Wath Church during the Miners'  Strike, supporting the workers and their families.

He was also invited to the Queens Garden Party in recognition of his services to scouting in 1999.

He celebrated 25 years as a reader at Wath Church in 2006.
