Rotherham schools could face strike action

TEACHERS in Rotherham are preparing for joint industrial action over pay, pensions, workloads, job losses and conditions.

The two biggest teachers’ unions this week announced the first stage of their nationally co-ordinated industrial action in disputes with the Secretary of State for Education.

The NASUWT and the NUT unions together represent nine out of ten teachers in Rotherham and the rest of England and Wales

The unions said that the move followed a joint declaration of intent by both organisations in May.

The Secretary of State was given the rest of the academic year to “genuinely” seek to resolve the issues under dispute but no progress had been made towards addressing the deep concerns of the teaching profession, unions said.

The NUT and NASUWT will issue notices of action short of strike action to employers this week which will take effect from September 26.

The Department for Education said it was disappointed by the move and added that the unions were taking action befor the independent pay review body had made any recommendations.
