Rotherham schools bursting at the seams, says report

NEARLY half of Rotherham’s schools are full or over-subscribed, a new scrutiny report has revealed.

Rotherham Borough Council has a duty to ensure there are enough places and increase parental choice.

But further measures are needed as 53 of 114 schools are working at or beyond full capacity this academic year.

Basic Need funding — given to Rotherham Borough Council to meet capital building costs — is limited and other options are being explored.

Section 106 agreements — involving developers handing over cash for community projects — will be used more often to contribute to additional school capacity.

Last month head teacher Joanne Walker told how Flanderwell Primary had made space for most of the pupils initially turned away earlier this year.

All but one of 15 children whose families appealed were given places in time for September, but parents fear a repeat of the problem in future.
