Rotherham market axed and libraries closed due to heatwave

TODAY’S town centre street market has been cancelled amid the heat, while bin lorries were sent out early to avoid the highest temperatures.

Libraries across the borough also shut at 12.30pm today.

A Rotherham Council spokesperson said: “Extreme temperatures mean that we are having to make some changes to our services to protect the public and our employees.”

The indoor market will close early at 1pm, while schools have been left to make their own calls over whether it was safe to open as normal.

All Saints' Square was busy before the big game yesterday, but quiet again today as shoppers fled from the sun's glare.

Libraries closing included Swinton, Kiveton Park, Thurcroft, Rawmarsh, Dinnington, Greasbrough, Wath and Thorpe Hesley but Riverside House is still open.
