Rotherham man in court charged with terror offences

A Rotherham man has appeared in court charged with terrorism and drug offences in relation to an investigation into “right wing terrorism”.

A police spokesperson said the charges were “part of an intelligence-led investigation into right wing terrorism”.

Christopher Carey (55), of Caperns Road, North Anston, is accused of three offences contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism ACT 2006, which covers the dissemination of terrorist publications, and possessing class A drugs.

Carey was arrested last Thursday by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

Police said the arrest was “pre-planned and intelligence-led”.

Carey appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court via video link on Saturday and was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear at the Central Criminal Court on Friday.

A 40-year-old man from Hampshire was also arrested on as part of the investigation in Portsmouth last Thursday and later released on conditional bail.

Portsmouth District Commander, Supt Clare Jenkins said: “We know that many people might be worried about this news. However, we are working together closely with our colleagues

“If you think you have seen something suspicious that may be linked to terrorist activity have the confidence to share those concerns.

“It may be unusual behaviour in a particular place or at a particular time of day, or online – don’t rely on others. Thank you for your continued support.”
