Rotherham girl power takes on world of welding

TWO female Rotherham students are making it in the traditionally male world of welding.

Rotherham College of Arts and Technology students Iona Haynes (19) and Vicky Bingham (18) are in their final year of the City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 Technical Certificate in Fabrication and Welding.

The pair have been carrying out their apprenticeships at C.W Fletcher, a Sheffield-based engineering company that specialises in the aerospace industry and have now been awarded full-time jobs when their apprenticeships finish.

Their success comes in time for National Apprenticeship Week this week

Iona and Vicky said: "We work really well with all the lads and it just seems to be the norm for us now. They do actually really look out for us!"

Iona and Vicky have been working on the Rolls Royce engines which are fitted into aeroplanes.

Steve Woodward, curriculum ;leader for Fabrication and Welding Engineering at the College said: "I am very proud of them both, they are a true asset to the College and they are both passionate and professional when it comes to their career.
