Rotherham family stranded by volcanic ash

Rotherham holidaymakers are among those stranded abroad by the ban on flights caused by the Icelandic volcanic ash.

Rossana Caruana, of Rawmarsh, emailed this picture to rotherhamadvertiser.co.uk from Sicily.

She wrote: “We’re stuck in Sicily and have to wait a whole week for our flight back to the UK and in Rotherham.

“We are very distressed because kids are going to miss school and we need to get back to work and normality.”

Flights began from Scotland and northern England this morning but aviation officials scrapped tentative plans to reopen the rest of British airspace as a new “strengthened” volcanic ash cloud began to head towards UK.

A small number of aircraft took off from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Newcastle this morning, the first British flights since airspace was temporarily reopened on Saturday.

However, airports in the South will remain closed until at least 7pm tonight and British Airways have abandoned plans to operate some short-haul flights.

Manchester Airport, which had been due to open at 9am, will now remain closed until this evening while Glasgow will also shut at 1pm.
