Rotherham councillors meet potential next Tory leader and PM Liz Truss

LIZ Truss has received the backing of Rotherham councillors who said she would deliver what the country needed as Prime Minister. 

The foreign secretary is vying with former chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak to become the next Conservative party leader. 

Aston & Todwick’s Cllr Joshua Bacon, Hellaby & Maltby West’s Cllr Simon Ball and Sitwell’s Cllr Simon Burnett met Ms Truss as she visited Newark, Nottingham, on the campaign trail. 

Cllr Bacon said: “Meeting Liz Truss was fantastic. It’s clear that Liz will deliver for the British people from day one. 

“Liz has delivered as Foreign Secretary and I look forward to seeing Liz deliver as Prime Minister.”

Despite believing both candidates demostrate “excellent leadership” Cllr Simon Burnett is backing Ms Truss as he feels she offers more “consistent Conservative values in lower taxes”.

“I can confirm that we met Liz Truss in Newark at a Conservative members’ event. Liz answered many questions that were asked of her and gave a very confident and personal speech on her plans if she becomes our next PM. 

“I have many reasons for my support, but most notedly she understands that getting our economy growing is an important priority, which is why she plans to reverse the National Insurance increase which I am in support of. 

“We need lower taxes and to also unite the party and the country which I believe Liz will bring.  

“Nearly 68 percent of Rotherham residents voted for Brexit, which is why I firmly believe that Liz will be the candidate to remove all existing EU Laws from UK law in a timely manner to allow the UK to move forward.”
