Rotherham Council warning for Dinnington fly-tippers and litter louts

LITTER louts blighting a village with dumped rubbish are being warned they could face a fine or a day in court, with council bosses warning: “We’re watching you!”

Rotherham Borough Council spoke out after the spotlight was shone on the scale of the problem in Dinnington.

Sofas, armchairs, mattresses and carpets were among the larger tipped items snapped by our photographers near the Victoria Road allotment site, while the service road and footpath alongside the growing plots were littered food and drink bottles and wrappers.

One resident, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, said he had been regularly reporting the issue to the council for some time.

“My major concern is Rotherham Council failing to change minds on litter and fly-tipping,” he said.

“I have been working on this issue for three years now and feel no further forward.

“I don’t believe us litter pickers should be seen as a long term solution.

“One of the allotments is getting out of hand — there’s a lot of rubbish on there as the public just tip it over the fence.

“I had a meeting with the council about the service road and there was some good action but it was tipped again within a week.

“It can only be a minority of people but they’re showing a general lack of respect for the community.

“I’m hoping some sort of enforcement will help — a little bit could make a big difference.”

The council’s cabinet member for cleaner, greener communities, Cllr Sarah Allen, said: We are aware of concerns raised in the area, and met with residents in December to seek to address any problems.

“Any concerns that were raised at that point were dealt with, including a one-off clean of the unadopted road behind Victoria Street.

“New signage is scheduled to be installed warning that the council regularly monitors this location, as well as others across the borough, and will always pursue enforcement action around fly-tipping where evidence can be obtained.”
