Roscars celebrate schools film success: WINNERS LIST

A CHILDREN’s festival came to an end last week with a red carpet event marking its eighth year of success.

This year’s Roscars, which launched in 2004, attracted more than 900 young people, parents, carers and school staff to the Hollywood-style event at Magna Science Adventure Centre.

The night celebrated the hard work and success of primary and secondary schools, in film making.

Films from schools across the borough were entered into four categories; stop motion animation, digital animation, film fact and film fiction.

A spokeswoman for the event said: “This was the final event of our three-week Children’s Festival and showcased all Rotherham’s talent in the best possible light.”

The evening was hosted for a second year by children’s television presenter Dave Benson-Phillips.

Anston Hillcrest Primary School and Wales High School took home the prizes for Best in Show for their individual age groups.

Joyce Thacker, strategic director of Children and Young People's Services, said: “The evening was an absolute joy.

“The room was buzzing with energy and the young people from the very young to those about to leave school were dressed in all their finery.

“The evening was a celebration of the outstanding achievements of our youngsters and was a delight for staff, parents and carers.

“This event just seems to get better every year and is a tribute to the youngsters of the borough.”

The Roscars form part of the Children’s Festival which aims to inspire youngsters and their families to celebrate learning.

Activities throughout the three-week festival included a Learning Awards Ceremony, recognising the success of students on the Young Apprenticeship and Diploma Programmes as well as honouring individuals.

Cllr Paul Lakin, Cabinet member for safeguarding and developing learning opportunities, said: “The festival gives everyone a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what our young people have achieved while at the same time offering them more fun opportunities to learn.”
