When officers arrived the man claimed to be injured and firefighters were called in rescue him.

Rush-hour traffic was stalled as part of Wellgate was cordoned off and the man was eventually brought down and transferred to hospital at around 8.40am.

Wellgate was  re-opened to traffic at around 10.30am.

A spokeswoman from South Yorkshire Police said: “Fire crews had to be called in and this man was eventually rescued using an aerial ladder platform.

“There’s no doubt that the operation caused disruption to traffic in the area at a busy time of the day.”
