RESTARTING ROTHERHAM: Outdoor market back in business

ROTHERHAM’S outdoor covered market has reopened today (Monday) following an easing of government lockdown restrictions.

New safety measures include a hand-sanitiser station, extra staff and a single point of entry from Drummond Street.

Capacity is limited to 50 customers and social distance markings have been placed on the ground.

Cllr Denise Lelliott, cabinet member for jobs and the local economy, said: “We are delighted to be re-opening the outdoor covered market. This another step in the phased re-opening and recovery of our town centre.

“Our markets team has worked extremely hard to put measures in place to protect the public, traders and our staff and their safety remains our number one priority.”

The market will be open as follows:

  • Monday: general retail, 8.30am to 5pm
  • Tuesday: second-hand, 8.30am to 4pm
  • Wednesday: second-hand, 8.30am to 4pm
  • Friday: general retail, 8.30am to 5pm
  • Saturday: general retail, 8.30am to 5pm

All market traders are required to complete a risk assessment for safe operation before being allowed to stand.

Yet to restart are the crafters’ market, bazaar and Tuesday street market, which RMBC says need further risk assessment work.

The indoor market continues to operate on Fridays and Saturdays from 8.30am to 2pm, for food only.
