Reprieve for Rotherham watersports centre as school steps in

A WATERSPORTS centre for the disabled has been saved after councillors agreed for a secondary school to take it over.

Specialist equipment used by disabled sailors will be retained as part of an agreement for Wickersley School and Sports College to lease Ulley Activity Centre, which closed its doors in August.

The moves comes after protests by parents and family members over the closure of the Rotherham Borough Council-owned centre.

Members of the borough council’s cabinet agreed the school should lease the building as well as have the use of the variety of equipment kept there.

The decision came after detailed negotiations with the school after the decision by the authority to vacate the premises by next March and dispose of the assets, including the equipment.

A cabinet meeting heard that the school has submitted a proposal to lease the centre from the authority’s Green Spaces department from now until March 2014, when it will review the position. If successful the agreement will then be extended until March 2017.
