Three fire crews and at least six police cars turned up at Glass House Lane alongside the Kilnhurst Cut canal at lunchtime today (Wednesday).

A yellow raft was put into the water and a helicopter hovered overhead as a large crowd watched officers search the water.

But it turned out to be a false alarm and the "body" was a bin bag full of plants.

An eyewitness, who was working nearby but asked not to be named, said: “It was a big deal but turned out to be a false alarm.

“A guy was who was fishing further upriver had rung the police and they just sent everyone.”

The eyewitness said that police officers used poles to grab the floating bag and bring it to the bank.

“A lot of the village came down and cars stopped so the drivers could look," he said.
