Two of the players the Millers have made offers for are St Johnstone right-back Shaun Rooney and Hamilton Academical defensive midfielder Hakeem Odoffin.

However, fees have yet to be agreed and Rotherham are prepared to look elsewhere if necessary.

With their League One campaign less than a fortnight away, the Millers have only 14 senior players and need to reinforce their squad.

"There are five players we want and we're bidding on four," Warne said after yesterday's 1-0 friendly win at Grimsby Town.

"We won't take all four because they play in similar positions. We're close to the parent clubs' valuations and then it's just a matter of negotiating with the players, which hopefully won't be a problem."

Rotherham, who have just sold midfielder Matt Crooks to Middlesbrough for £1.1 million, are targeting a third successive promotion from the third tier.

Their initial £200,000 offer for Rooney, aged 24, was rejected but they and St Johnstone, who wanted £300,000 are talking again and a compromise figure could be reached.

Hamilton want more than the Millers have put on the table so far for Odoffin. Clubs north of the border are also believed to be keen on acquiring the 23-year-old's signature.

Warne refused to comment on specific targets but said generally about the players Rotherham are chasing: "The negotiations go on forever because, obviously, we're trying to take the prize assets out of the clubs.

"The same thing happened with us and Crooksy. That went on for quite a long period of time, seven or eight weeks of the summer.

"The clubs want top dollar and obviously we don't want to pay that. In the next week we'll get to the point where the players are ours or we move on to other targets."

The Millers bid for St Mirren defender Conor McCarthy at the end of last season but are now pursuing other players in his position.
