They planted 13 different trees which were chosen to reflect the multicultural aspect of the school.

The youngsters were helped along by a grant from The Tree Council and extra man power was provided by the borough council's Green Spaces Unit, volunteers and parents/carers of the children.

Pauline Buchanan Black, The Tree Council's Director-General, said: "We were able to make this grant thanks to the generosity of an anonymous charitable foundation and we are delighted that Kimberworth Community Centre of Learning will be helping to celebrate National Tree Week."

Kimberworth Community Centre of Learning is one of 60 schools and 30 community groups across the country to share the grants totalling more than £45,000.

The children themselves also raised money towards the project by taking part in a sponsored skip and selling produce in school that they had grown in the school vegetable garden.
