Nursery and primary school children at St Bede’s Primary School, Kimberworth, took part in an educational day with soup manufacturer Baxters which is also celebrating 150 years.

The Scottish soup brand challenged senior pupils at the school to design their own label for a chicken and vegetable soup.

They were given three weeks to come up with a “souper” design before a winning label is picked to appear on 30 cans which will be supplied to the whole class.

Darren Sivewright, Baxters’ group innovation manager, spoke to pupils about how Baxters soups were created and the history of the company, as well as the nutritional benefits of soup and how it reaches supermarket shelves — before giving them taste and encouraging them to create their own flavours.

Amanda Wassell, headteacher of St Bede’s Catholic Primary School, said: “We are absolutely delighted Baxters has been able to work in partnership with us on this exciting project as part of our anniversary activity.

“The staff and children had a truly memorable day which started with a whole school assembly, led by Darren, to talk about Baxters’ history, where food comes from and how soup is made.

“The children then spent the morning sampling existing Baxters soup flavours before designing their own, and creating labels to be entered into the competition.”
