Pub blitz on under-age drinkers

PUBS in Wombwell have adopted the Challenge 21 policy to cut down on underage drinkers.

Members of the Darfield Pubwatch unanimously agreed to put up posters and ask younger customers for proof they are at least 18.

Two more pubs have also taken up a voluntary code of conduct. They will cut out drinks promotions which might encourage binge-drinking.

Maximum discounts will be two-for-one and single drinks will not be priced under £1.30.

Wombwell Safer Neighbourhood Team has attended the pubwatch meetings to support the efforts of licensees.

PC Stuart Leadbeater said officers were pleased with the progress, which should help reduce crime and violence in the area.

He added: “Most licensed premises in the Wombwell and Darfield area will now ask for patrons who, in their opinion appear to be under 21 years, to prove they are over 18.

“We ask genuine customers not to take offence if challenged. We are keen to work alongside licenses to make Wombwell and Darfield an even safer and enjoyable place to socialise.”
