PPI pests harrassed pensioner SEVEN times an hour

A PENSIONER is warning people not to be taken in by scammers after being harassed by a man claiming to be from a PPI firm - up to SEVEN times an hour.

Christine Roderickson (69) and her husband Peter (62), of Clifton Grove, Rotherham, were regularly called by a man who claimed he could refund them £2,500 in mis-sold payment protection insurance.

The man called Mr Roderickson’s mobile every day for around a fortnight.

Mrs Roderickson said she had previously had PPI refunded by a reputable firm but the scammer had been plaguing them with unsolicited phone calls.

“This man has phoned up saying you can get £2,500 back and you can have it before Christmas,” she said.

“But he says, to save us paying £250 in tax, we have got to take out a life insurance policy for £20 a month.

“Once, he rang us seven times in an hour.

“I’m not young but if somebody elderly got this kind of phone call they might not think to report it.”

Mrs Roderickson said she and her husband had tried to ignore him.

“We just ignored it and put the phone down and said we were not interested,” she said.

Mrs Roderickson said the man used persuasive phrases such as “Just imagine what it would be like to have that money before Christmas”.

“Peter just said to him; ‘We have had some PPI back and we don’t know anything about any more’.

“I don’t know how he’s got Peter’s number - I haven’t given it out.”

Mrs Roderickson said she had recorded the man’s phone number and would report him to the charity Action Fraud.

PPI is a product which was sold to millions of people in the UK along with loans, credit cards and store cards to insure them against a change in circumstances which would have meant they could not repay a debt.

It was largely mis-sold, and banks, building societies and insurance firms have paid out billions of pounds in compensation.
