Police warning over fake "Covid wardens" issuing "fines" for not wearing masks

POLICE have warned people to be on their guard after reports of bogus “Covid wardens” demanding on-the-spot “fines”.

The fraudsters are reportedly “fining” people for not wearing masks.

A spokesperson for Doncaster West NHP, which covers Conisbrough and Mexborough, said: “We have received reports in the area of people claiming to be COVID enforcement officers.

“It is reported that they are demanding on the spot fines from people not wearing masks.

“To be clear, only police officers can enforce the Covid legislation — there are no on the spot on fines, you should not hand any cash to anyone.

“A police officer will show you their ID card unless they are in uniform.”

Anyone with concerns should contact the police on 101.
