Police warning over bogus callers

POLICE have urged residents to be extra vigilant against distraction burglars and bogus callers.

Criminals have been targeting vulnerable and elderly folk by claiming to be from water, gas and electric companies.

A police spokeswoman said: “They often come across as being very nice and polite and use this to their advantage as a way of getting into your home.”

Det Chief Insp Craig Robinson, head of Rotherham CID, said: “If you are not sure who is at your door, do not open it.

“If someone asks for your help, needs a drink of water or suggests that they are there on behalf of a water or electric company, offering to do roof repairs, especially if reference is made to checking the loft, or has lost a ball then please check their details.

“There are many things that we can do to prevent these offences. I would appeal for any information that will lead to the identity of people who are committing these offences.

“The message I will give out to any would-be offenders is to be careful, we are looking for you.”

Cllr Rose McNeely, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “We work very closely with the police and other partners to ensure that vulnerable members of our community are protected from this type of crime.

“This includes setting up No Cold-Calling Zones in specific areas of the borough, which should give residents the protection they need from rogue traders and doorstep callers.

“If the area where you live isn’t covered by a No Cold-Calling Zone and you feel that it should be, you should contact your local councillor for advice.”

Tips to steer clear of becoming a victim include:

- Keep your front and back door locked at all times and never open them to anyone who is not expected.

- Contact your energy and water providers to set up a password and never let anyone into your home that does not know this password.

- Always ask to see the caller’s ID. It is okay to refuse entry if you are not completely satisfied that the caller is genuine.

- If you live in a No Cold-Calling Zone and experience an unwanted doorstep caller, you should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

- If you feel threatened or in danger, ring 999 immediately.
